MONDAY MUSIC | Wicked Little Town: Tommy Gnosis Version

This is from the last song on the film, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

"Wicked Little Town: Tommy Gnosis Version"

Forgive me,
For I did not know.
'Cause I was just a boy
You were so much more

Than any god could ever plan,
More than a woman or a man.
Now I understand
How much I took from you:
That, when everything starts breaking down,
You take the pieces off the ground
And show this wicked town
something beautiful and new.

You think that Luck
Has left you there.
But maybe there's nothing
Up in the sky but air.

And there's no mystical design,
No cosmic lover preassigned.
There's nothing you can find
that cannot be found.
'Cause, with all the changes
you've been through,
It seems the stranger's always you,
Alone again in some new
Wicked little town.

When you've got no other choice
You know you can follow my voice
Through the dark turns and noise
Of this wicked little town.
It's a wicked little town.
Goodbye, wicked little town.

We saw this on DVD last year and I was really blown away! I love the wonderfully quirky story line that ultimately made me really sad... And the music was just so great! The soundtrack was on loop for several weeks after. I like to listen to the tracks in order because it creates a narrative that reminds me of the storyline. I have days where I love "Sugar Daddy" and others where I can't stop playing "Origin of Love" (awesome video!)

If you can get your hands on the DVD, it's interesting to watch the evolution of the Broadway production and how the different actors who have played Hedwig brought with them their own personalities and made the character just that little different. I think John Cameron Mitchell will always be considered the quintessential Hedwig though...

I bought the DVD many years ago and felt it was so campy and sad at the same time. One of the better musicals on DVDs I've watched so far.

I couldn't quite convince my friends to watch it though - because the moment they heard the story, they were like, "WTF?"

Oh well.

Just another one of those instances when I miss being back home, the comfort of being surrounded by my DVDs, CDs and books.

And how are you feeling today, mummy-san? :)
