French president Nicolas Sarkozy has often expressed his disdain for the novel, La Princesse de Cleves. His very public opinion of the 17th century novel has helped the book gain a reputation as the literature of dissent against Sarkozy. [ Source ]
Recently the sales of La Princesse de Cleves has risen. The French people dislike Sarkozy so much they feel they need to read the book.
This is the kind of story that makes me go all warm and fuzzy inside. It makes me want to learn French and move to Paris. I love a culture that protest by reading.

Good story, but great last line, "I love a culture that protest by reading"!
Hahaha. I love their very cultured mode of dissent. :)
I love a low-approval-rating president that publishes a public domain book right before stating how much he hates it.
I wonder if Obama hated a book, if people would leave it alone en masse or what?
Actually, I want to read La Princesse Cleves now, too, and I don't have any feelings about the French president.
Bybee - Well, I don't think Obama would be the sort that talks about a book he hates. He would probably talk more about the books that he loves and influenced him - because Obama is a reader.
And books on Lincoln are selling these days thanks to Obama!
this is a most excellent story!
Stefanie - The French people are just so fun, aren't they? :)
haha! yeah, isn't that just the most intellectual form of protest ever! :D
